Surgical Residency – Operative Experience
One of the strengths of our program is the volume and case diversity available for residency training. When the case volume of our 2019 graduates is compared to that of all surgery residents, we were at the 69th percentile for cases nationally, with an average of 1,178 cases per resident. This well exceeds the 850-case minimum set by accrediting bodies.
Areas in which we are the highest volume quartile for all surgery residencies include:
- Trauma (both operative and non-operative)
- Surgical Critical Care
- Vascular Surgery
- Endoscopy
- Pediatric Surgery
- Plastic Surgery
- Head and Neck Surgery
Additionally, we are above the national average for esophagus, anorectal, endocrine, and thoracic surgery. Though a statistical ranking is not available for transplantation surgery, our residents averaged 23 transplant cases each, as compared to 10 nationally.
The ACGME also requires that surgery residents complete a minimum of 250 cases by the end of their second year of residency. Most interns meet the 250 case threshold at the end of a single year. Our residents greatly exceed that minimum, averaging 387 cases each, which is 154% of the requirement.
A rotation to our rural surgery hospital in Ahoskie, NC permits one on one work with a true general surgeon serving the local community.
