Goals and Objectives for Clerkship

  1. Learn what constitutes a surgical disease and when to seek input from a surgical colleague
  2. Outline the basic surgical diseases and the pathophysiology of these entities, i.e. trauma, biliary disorders, acute abdomen, vascular disease and breast disease
  3. Perform basic surgical techniques such as Foley catheter insertion, suturing, NG insertion and others
  4. Use the medical literature in a root cause analysis assignment
  5. Perform preoperative workup of elective surgical patients including informed consent and risk assessment
  6. Explain general perioperative management of surgical patients, including expected recovery and potential complications
  7. Differentiate what constitutes a surgical emergency and requires urgent consultation or referral
  8. Describe various wound management options including drains and dressings
