Surgical Residency – How to Apply
We are glad you are interested in our General Surgery Residency at The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and ECU Health Medical Center. All applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) created by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in conjunction with the National Residency MATCH Program (NRMP). Off-cycle positions are rare and will be announced through the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) Open Positions listings, We regret we are unable to review any applications submitted outside these pathways.
Applicants for categorical and preliminary positions will utilize the ERAS system for data collection and transmission and will be reviewed shortly after the system opens to programs in mid-September. Our program receives over 200 applications for each categorical position. All interviews will be virtual for the 2024/2025 application year using Thalamus.
All Applicants are assessed based on:
-
- Common Application Form
- CV report
- Personal statement
- Medical School Transcript
- Dean’s letter
- Three letters of recommendation
- USMLE transcripts for Step II OR COMLEX II
- ECFMG certificate (foreign medical graduates only)
- Supplemental ERAS application (optional)*
Categorical interviews will occur from November through January for five positions. Slots are offered on a first come, first served basis to the top candidates based on an evaluation of educational accomplishments, scholarly work, leadership development, communication skills, contributions to society, and a work ethic demonstrating teamwork, professionalism, and enthusiasm for personal development. Everyone has 48 hours to reply and we do not extend more interviews than we have spots.
We encourage qualified applicants of all backgrounds to apply. East Carolina University is committed to equality of education opportunity and does not discriminate against applicants, students, or employees based on race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, or disability.
Our program actively seeks to recruit trainees who desire an experience with focus on underserved populations in a largely rural population extending across 29 counties. Retention in the program is extremely high. All residents are paired with a faculty member and a more senior resident as mentors in an intentional manner. Mentorship is also provided for pregnancy and parenting, informally and through GME policies.
Should you have any questions or concerns about the application process specifically for East Carolina University please contact Surgical Education at email surgeryed@ecu.edu or phone number 252-744-5069. Thank you for your interest in East Carolina University.
For the upcoming recruitment cycle, our program strongly encourages all applicants to also complete a supplemental ERAS application, offered through the AAMC’s ERAS program. The additional information will help our program staff learn more about applicants’ medical education journey, including more meaningful information about work, volunteer, and research experiences, and help us better identify applicants who fit our program environment and mission. This supplemental ERAS application will be delivered on a survey platform outside the MyERAS application and is to be completed between September 1 and September 30.
